I also learned that May is pet cancer awareness month. The American Kennel Club, Petco and Blue Buffalo are supporting this cause. The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation which has a 4 star charity navigator rating seems to be mostly involved in supporting research which would be my preference for giving, though both seem to be worthwhile.
Update July 17, 2014
Sadly, I've found a few more lumps and suspicious growths on her, so she will be going back in to have those removed. We will be skipping the biopsy before surgery since they look suspicious enough. I will be making another appointment with the canine oncologist for her once we know for sure (after she has the lumps removed). She did just have a clean ultrasound of her spleen however, which is great news.
Updated Sept 1, 2014
It took a while to get her in for surgery due to a busy schedule at the Vet's, and she also had some suspicious blood test results come back which scuttled the first attempt (however follow up tests gave her the all clear). She finally had the surgery last weekend and she looks like she is bouncing back from the surgery pretty well. Amazingly she is not running away from the e-collar and does not seem at all concerned with the sutures. It will be some days before we have the biopsy results back though.
