There is a petition out there which I have posted before, asking that congress do something about this, and specifically keep this imported chicken out of school lunches. There is some great information on the latest developments and what other things folks can do about it here.
Thanks to the USDA, Chinese companies will soon be allowed to process American chickens and ship them back for sale in the USA. This means nuggets, patties, chunks etc could be processed in China, with zero onsite USDA inspectors at the processing plants monitoring day to day operations (oh wait we don't do that anymore either). The worst part is, they don't have to tell you where it was processed. Well the worst part is, it could end up in school lunches. It seems this is just the foot in the door for allowing China to sell poultry raised and processed in China, here in the US. Unfortunately China does not have the best track record for food safety in recent years, but that does not seem to have stopped the USDA from opening the US market up.
