Canon 70-300mm lens (and camera) I just discovered something really cool about the new 1.10 firmware that I loaded on my Pentax Q. It now has "focus peaking"! So what the heck is focus peaking? Well it basically highlights edges and makes manual focus a snap. Here is a link for a video which explains how it works. Where this really shines is with an adapter. I bought one for Canon lenses and it will turn my 70-300mm into a 350-1500mm due to the 5x crop factor, and that's without the 1.4x teleconverter. That will make for an insane telephoto using a lens I already have. The drawback is no aperture control, and no autofocus, but at least there are some ways to improve the manual focus. To use focus peaking and the 4x (or 2x) MF assist: Press the Menu button > move to the "camera" 1 options > scroll down to the Focus Settings (press ok) >Set Focus Method to MF >Set MF Assist to 4x (or 2x) >Set Focus Peaking to ON Now, when you mount a non-Q lens (with a dumb adapter), you will be able to use the focus peaking - it will work without any other button press. To see a 4x (or 2x if that's what you set up) crop, to assist manual focus, just press the "OK" button. These two features really help with manual focus using the Q and a third party lens. I just received my HYPNOCUBE! today from ThinkGeek. I became convinced of the awesome power of the HYPNOCUBE! when it awakened from it's deep hibernation after a clearly perilous journey to my door. The box which contained it bore the scars of many a pitched battle, I could only imagine what carnage it must have seen - perhaps it met up with a cousin of the Rancor or a Chupacabro. No matter, it is here and it is truly magnificent. Staring into it's ambiguous void, I can almost..hear it speaking to me, I think... it is saying... vote for..for..Bar..itt..Ob..ney? WTF, is this thing defective? All I wanted was something to provide me wisdom with my most difficult choices and now I have to flip a coin. I could have saved $59.94 (pennies are for chumps). It does look cool though. |
