Update 4/8/2014 - Took her to see a veterinary oncologist who was pretty hopeful about her prospects. She had an x-ray yesterday and it looked clear, but her vet is sending it out to have a radiologist review it, and next up are some abdominal ultrasounds to make sure it has not spread. Of course none of this stuff is cheap, but it makes at least some sense to get it taken care of now, rather than risk it spreading. I also need to get her scheduled to see a surgeon to do the removal of the subcutaneous mass and excise some of the skin around one of the previously removed tumors (to get a bit more margins).
Apparently mast cell tumors are not uncommon in certain breeds like boxers (as they age). I'm not sure what cocktail of DNA my dog is made of, but I think there is some boxer in there. She had two growths removed and one more biopsied, and all were positive. The good news is that two of them were completely removed, but the bad news is that one is still in her and it is a bit ambiguous. She had another growth removed several years ago which was also positive, and we thought that it was all removed. This time however, her vet suggested that I take her to an oncologist. She is a great dog, and like a member of the family, I just hope I can afford to help her. I hope to find out later this week what the plan is going to be.

This was the first "real" climb I've done. Aside from the occasional trip to the rock gym and some climbing with buddies in High School, my spidey skills are very poor. Even so I surprised myself and made it through a climbing skills course taught by a great bunch of folks. Had a great time, and although I have some new sore spots, I wanna to do it again. She had a biopsy on two growths yesterday, there is another suture on the other side which is about as long. I took the cone of shame off for now, but it will be going right back on at bedtime. She seems to be doing pretty good though. The vet did a great job and it looks like it will heal up just fine. I recently bought a Titus Racer-X 29er frame that I could not pass up. I've always wanted a Racer-X, even though I am the exact opposite of a Racer (but I have the X part down). The bike just seems like it has some old school charm due to being designed and built by a scrappy US company that had some brilliant designers and a great product. Unfortunately they had bad timing, I believe that the original Titus went bankrupt during the housing bust and was later resurrected and still builds bikes today. When they were new, there was no way I could afford to spend the kind of money they sold for. I cannot justify or afford a bike that costs as much as a used motorcycle. I'm also not a very hard core mountain biker. To be honest, I'm really building this in hopes of getting back into mountain biking regularly. So now that I have the bike of my dreams, I just gotta move the stuff from the donor bike over to the new one. Click here for more. |
