Sadly it seems that the FDA does not even know what is killing dogs yet. A while ago, I saw a story that mentioned that in one case of suspected food poisoning, the FDA did not want the food to test, but rather the dead animal. Who knows what the rest of the story is in that particular case, but hopefully they are at least checking the food now. Of note, the doctor they took issue with was instrumental in detecting the melamine tainted pet food problem in 2007.
The latest is that the CDC is going to investigate the sicknesses related to Chinese dog treats, which seems hopeful. The problem of sick pets from Chinese treats has been simmering for way too long though. Some of the major pet stores are beginning to take notice, and are committing to stopping sales of Chinese made pet treats. Though they are hardly slamming on the brakes (it will take them at least till the end of the year) - still good for them. In the mean time, I think I may try making some homemade treats, I can't afford any more vet bills.
